The Open Society Fund Bosnia and Herzegovina is an independent, non-profit organization founded in 1993 as part of the Open Society Foundations. To achieve their goal, the Foundations strive to shape public policies that guarantee greater fairness in the political, legal and economic systems, and the protection of fundamental rights. At the local level, the Foundations implement a number of initiatives to improve the judiciary, education, health, independent media, and to protect and improve the lives of people in marginalized communities. Investor and philanthropist George Soros founded the Open Society Foundations in 1984, in an effort to help countries in Eastern Europe transition from communism. The Foundation’s activities have since expanded to the United States and more than 70 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. Each Foundation relies on the expertise of its board, composed of distinguished citizens, who determine individual programs based on local priorities.

PROJECTS:

Center for International Private Enterprise

CIPE is one of the four major institutes of the National Endowment for Democracy and a subsidiary of the United States Chamber of Commerce. Founded by President Ronald Reagan in 1983, the institute’s existence has remained relevant to this day. Free-market capitalism and global trade have resulted in the greatest economic gains in human history, but shortcomings persist, and some remain. These are the result of unequal economic opportunity, the lack of universal entrepreneurial and economic opportunities, and the inability of people to connect to global value chains. CIPE’s programs work to address these problems. CIPE is founded on the principle that economic freedoms and political freedoms are linked. A strong private sector needs a thriving democracy to function—and vice versa. The institute’s work is based on building strong democratic institutions to create an environment conducive to business and entrepreneurship.
